H.O. Studley Tool Chest

This magnificent tool chest was built by a New England cabinetmaker during the 19th Century. He spent a good part of his life working in a piano factory, and there are several piano specific tools in this chest. I believe there are some 300 tools packed away in there.

Several exotic materials were used, from wood as mundane as mahogany to mother-of-pearl and ivory inlays. Frankly, some of the tools inside are as enthralling as the chest itself.

Fine Woodworking magazine had a gorgeous picture of this on the back cover of one of their issues some years ago. They then printed a poster which was very popular but sold out and was unavailable for a long time. It's since been reprinted and may now be available.

This chest was on display at the Smithsonian for a while, apparently on loan from the owner, a private collector to whom the chest has now returned.
